Motorola, has played a key role in five of the European Union’s eight BIODEVII projects, led by France, helping to create biometric solutions for border control in Austria, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain and the UK.
The aim of the EU’s BIODEVII pilot programme is to establish best practice around the use of biometrics to strengthen the visa system throughout the EU. The introduction of a visa system backed by biometric technology is being developed to reduce visa fraud (and ‘visa shopping’), prevent identity theft and to combat terrorism and human trafficking.

Based on previously announced decisions of the Board of Directors to issue shares held by the Company, 21 158 Nokia shares held by the Company are on January 31, 2008 transferred to Nokia equity plan participants as settlement under the plans.
In total 77 340 shares are transferred to the equity plan participants on January 31, 2008.

Verizon Wireless announced today that it has expanded the national rollout of its high-speed wireless network to Rockford, Ill.
The expansion covers the entire Rockford metropolitan area and includes the surrounding communities of Freeport, Lena, and Galena to the west and DeKalb and Sycamore to the east. In northwestern Illinois, Verizon Wireless’ broadband network now spans north into Wisconsin, south to U.S. Interstate 80, west into Iowa, and east to the Kane County/McHenry County border.
Verizon Wireless’ broadband network was introduced in Illinois in Chicagoland in January 2005, with expansion to the Springfield-Decatur market in 2006, and to the Peoria market in 2007.
AT&T has announced that Brown and Caldwell, a full-service environmental engineering and consulting firm, has signed a three-year $2 million Internet Protocol (IP)-based data and networking services contract with AT&T. Under terms of the contract, AT&T will provide Brown and Caldwell with Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)-enabled Virtual Private Network (VPN) services.

Nearly four years ago, Verizon Wireless said that a wireless directory would be a “dumb idea.” Now, as another company leaks its plans to sell the cell phone numbers of private citizens, Verizon Wireless today called on that company to halt the mining and sale of these numbers.
“Stop it. This is a violation of Americans’ privacy. People expect their cell phone numbers to remain private,” said Steve Zipperstein, vice president and general counsel of Verizon Wireless. He added that Verizon Wireless intends to take whatever steps might be necessary, including litigation, to protect its customers’ numbers and privacy.

Verizon Wireless announced today that it has expanded the national rollout of its high-speed wireless network to the Champaign-Urbana, Ill., area.
The expansion spans approximately 4,900 square miles around the cities of Champaign, Urbana, Danville, Charleston, Mattoon, and surrounding communities, and covers routes between Decatur and Danville along U.S. Interstate 74 and between Rantoul and Neoga along U.S. Interstate 57. Other towns located within the coverage area include St. Joseph, Shelbyville, Monticello, Sullivan, and Arthur.

Nokia today announced that the company is in negotiations to divest its Automotive Business to the former head of Nokia’s Enhancements unit and the Automotive Business, and Equity Partners GmbH.
If the negotiations are successful, the transaction will enable employment for the personnel in the current Automotive entity at the new company. Nokia will start consultations with the works council about the transfer of the Automotive Business including the transfer of the affected employees to the new company.
