Alcatel-LucentAlcatel-Lucent will today welcome around 100 guests from the worlds of business, politics and the scientific community to view its completely renovated and modernized company campus and Bell Labs research facility in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen.Baden-Württemberg Minister of Economic AffairsErnst Pfister, Stuttgart Lord Mayor Dr. Wolfgang Schuster and Wolfgang Welk, Chairman of Alcatel-Lucent Deutschland AG, will be attending the grand opening.

“We’re proud to send a clear signal in 2008 reaffirming Stuttgart as an industrial location with our new campus,” explained Wolfgang Weik, looking back on two and a half years of building work. “We’re developing tomorrow’s Internet and next generation broadband wireless technologies here.” Alcatel-Lucent in Germany, including its Bell Labs research facility, is a driving force in many innovative fields, contributing decisively to the group’s world leadership in optical networking and the latest mobile communications technologies (GSM/EDGE/W-CDMA/WiMAX/ LTE, with flexible radio access systems, advanced antenna technologies, etc.)

Speaking for the city of Stuttgart as Baden-Württemberg’s capital, Lord Mayor Wolfgang Schuster underscored the fact that Alcatel-Lucent and its predecessor companies have been at home in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen over 60 years. Significant innovations, such as modern airport landing systems, electronic teleprinters or the digital SYSTEM 12 switching system, were developed here. “We’re very pleased that Alcatel-Lucent’s renovation of its Stuttgart location into a modern, state-of-the-art campus - an initiative that clearly underscores the company’s bond to the city and the Zuffenhausen district in particular.

The new facility’s layout will benefit the entire Alcatel-Lucent staff with significantly shorter distances and communication zones designed to promote teamwork within individual departments. The renovation of the campus greatly benefits the research and development department. The laboratories and test facilities, which were previously distributed across several locations, have now been grouped in a central building featuring the latest technology. The setting has also become even more attractive for continuing education at the Alcatel-Lucent University and events on the company campus. A state-of-the-art conference center can accommodate gatherings from large to small.

Wolfang Weik emphasized the parallels between the company’s technological advances and the ways in which Baden-Württemberg fosters innovation: “Alcatel-Lucent’s great dedication to research and development is complemented by the outstanding research institutes and universities in Baden-Württemberg that actively cooperate with the company.” The close relationship between research and business is one of Baden-Württemberg’s strengths.

The cores of eight buildings on the campus were successively stripped and modernized from the ground up. Other parts of the campus were demolished and a completely new building created. With the completion of the relocation phase, Alcatel-Lucent is now a tenant, occupying a gross floor area of around 92,000 m2 of the site’s total of 249,000 m². With its renovation and modernization, Alcatel-Lucent has created an optimal work environment for its 2,300 employees in Stuttgart.
