Alcatel-LucentAlcatel-Lucent is showcasing its leadership in the deployment of broadcast mobile TV at the world’s largest Consumer Electronics trade fair, the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) 2008, held from August 29 to September 3 in Berlin (Alcatel-Lucent booth: Technical and Scientific Forum (TWF) in Hall 5.3, Booth #22).

During IFA 2008, Alcatel-Lucent is demonstrating, for the first time in Europe, MPE-iFEC (Multi-Protocol Encapsulation – inter-burst Forward Error Correction), a powerful error-correction coding that improves the quality of broadcast mobile TV reception in hybrid satellite and terrestrial networks. This innovative feature is embedded in the DVB-SH mobile broadcast standard (Digital Video Broadcast – Satellite services to Handhelds).

MotorolaThe St. Paul City Council on Wednesday will accept a donation of mission critical communications equipment from Motorola, Inc. in support of the 2008 Republican National Convention (RNC), to be held September 1-4. For their contribution, the St. Paul City Council will recognize Motorola during the council’s weekly meeting at 3:30 p.m. on August 27.

Motorola will provide the St. Paul Police Department with 1,100 portable radios and additional support personnel to assist public safety communications around the clock during the RNC. The radios are interoperable with Minnesota’s state-of-the-art Allied Radio Matrix for Emergency Response System (ARMER). The ARMER system, designed by Motorola, uses the 800 MHz public safety radio band and enables communications among all of the public safety agencies in the St. Paul metro area.

Ericsson in exclusive broadband deal for flagship Saudi tech city

EricssonEricsson is to supply, build, integrate operate and manage multiplay communications infrastructure for Saudi Arabia’s high-tech flagship, King Abdullah Economic City. The five-year sole-supplier partnership agreement with Emaar, developer of the smart-city project, is the first for an end-to-end fixed network in Saudi Arabia.

This turnkey agreement award breaks new ground in Saudi Arabia as Ericsson’s first GPON- enabled IPTV contract, the first fiber optic contract and the first fixed-network IMS contract where Ericsson provides systems integration and network rollout services. The contract brings together products from Ericsson’s major acquisitions – Entrisphere, Marconi, Redback and TANDBERG Television – and the company’s telecom services portfolio.

Sprint Signs Partners for Pioneering XOHM WiMAX Location-Based Services

sprintXOHM(TM) WiMAX mobile broadband customers can have information customized for their locations and personalized to their needs with new Sprint ecosystem agreements that help pioneer subscriber location services.

Sprint is building a WiMAX high-speed mobile data network which will debut commercially in Baltimore this September. Other cities are expected to receive service in the fourth quarter and beyond. “The XOHM mobile broadband experience will be largely location-centric,” explained Rick Robinson, vice president of XOHM Services. “We’re creating a new dimension to online presence, making points of interest near your current location easy to identify and access. This ‘geobrowsing’ effect provides location context and will give XOHM members a richer personal broadband experience when they’re mobile.”
