NokiaNokia and OZ Communications today announced that Nokia is to acquire OZ, a privately held company with approximately 220 employees and headquartered in Montreal, Canada. OZ, the leading consumer mobile messaging solution provider, delivers access to popular instant messaging and email services on consumer mobile devices.

“With OZ, Nokia is renewing its mission of Connecting People by enabling consumers to easily connect and communicate using their favorite Internet communities,” said Niklas Savander, Head of Nokia Services & Software. “OZ’s team and technology will help Nokia to address the fast growing consumer messaging market.”

NokiaQt Software today announced that Qtopia, a platform for creating user interfaces and applications for advanced consumer electronics based on Linux, has been renamed and launched as Qt Extended 4.4.

Qt enables developers to build innovative services and applications once and then extend the innovation across all major desktop, mobile and other embedded platforms without rewriting the code. Qt Extended extends the Qt application development framework, bringing increased functionality to embedded Linux. Qt Extended inherits the Qt WebKit Integration, which helps device manufacturers enrich applications with live web content such as online maps, music stores and instant messaging.

Motorola Completes Acquisition of AirDefense

MotorolaMotorola today announced the completion of its acquisition of AirDefense, Inc., a leading wireless LAN (WLAN) security provider.

As previously announced on July 28, 2008, Motorola signed a definitive agreement to acquire privately-held AirDefense, which will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Motorola integrated into Motorola’s Enterprise Mobility business.

AT&TAT&T today announced the expansion of its global network capacity via participation in an industry consortium supporting a new undersea communications cable spanning the Pacific Ocean. The Trans-Pacific Express Submarine Cable Consortium today announced that the first phase of the Trans-Pacific Express (TPE) submarine cable system is ready for service, directly connecting China, the United States, Korea and Taiwan.

The TPE system is designed to provide greater capacity and higher speeds to meet the dramatic increase in demand for IP, data and voice communications with the Asia-Pacific region. The high-bandwidth fiber-optic submarine cable can carry up to 5.12 terabits per second over a total of 18,000 kilometers.
