Motorola Powers Unwired Fiji’s Mobile WiMAX Network

MotorolaMotorola announced today that it has been selected by Unwired Fiji to design and deploy an end-to-end 802.16e-based WiMAX network to upgrade and provide increased capacity to the operator’s existing network for expansion of network coverage and capacity. The deployment allows Unwired Fiji to offer advanced broadband services supported by Motorola’s carrier-grade communications equipment and services, strengthening the operator’s leading market position in the region.

Unwired Fiji, the country’s first wireless broadband Internet service provider, is dedicated to building a nationwide, state-of-the-art telecommunications network, offering full Internet services and bringing the media mobility experiences to home users and businesses. The WiMAX network deployment is expected to be completed in 2009, and the operator plans to launch services progressively this year.

AT&TThe Houston Independent School District (HISD) has signed a contract for AT&T fleet management services, enabling the school district to wirelessly monitor its fleet of more than 1,100 school buses and official vehicles. HISD is now able to facilitate more efficient and safe management of its fleet of vehicles by using GPS technology over the AT&T wireless network.

The AT&T solution enables HISD to remotely track, in real time, the location and speed of its vehicles and confirm that its buses are traveling along scheduled routes and stops. Additionally, the school district can monitor when a vehicle’s ignition is turned on or off and whether or not safety lights and exit doors are working properly.

NokiaAs part of their plans to further boost the adoption of advanced Mobile Internet services in the Middle East, Etisalat and Nokia announced a joint collaboration to provide convenient access to advanced mobile Internet based services. These services include maps, navigation and games on Nokia devices, based on the Ovi services platform provided by Nokia.

In the first phase of the collaboration, Etisalat’s UAE mobile customers will be able to enjoy Ovi Maps and N-Gage Games on their Nokia devices, through an easy and convenient payment mechanism. Subscribers to Ovi Maps and purchasers of N-Gage games can now choose to combine their payments for these advanced mobile internet based services with their Etisalat account. The payment will be directed to their account automatically, if chosen accordingly, while customers will also have the existing option of paying through their credit cards.
