Alcatel-LucentAlcatel-Lucent through its Chinese flagship company Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, and Datang Mobile today announced that their consortium has been selected by China Mobile for deployment of its phase III TD-SCDMA mobile networks in 11 provinces. With this win, the consortium expands its market footprint and maintains its leadership position in the TD-SCDMA market, achieving overall market presence in 16 out of 31 provincial markets in China.

Building on their successful network roll out in previous phases, Alcatel-Lucent and Datang Mobile will expand their TD-SCDMA footprints into 11 provinces namely Guangdong, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanxi, Anhui, Liaoning, Gansu, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Guizhou. Notably, the consortium secured prominent market positions in Guangdong, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, the four provinces with the highest gross domestic product (GDP) and network growth potential in China.

In December 2008, Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell and Datang Mobile provided their industry-leading TD-SCDMA solutions for 11 of the 28 cities covered by China Mobile’s phase II TD-SCDMA network, including Nanjing, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Changchun, Hefei, Guiyang, Kunming, Xi’an, Lanzhou, Yinchuan and Urumqi, all provincial capitals with the exception of Ningbo. Since 2004, Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell and Datang Mobile have engaged in a strategic partnership to develop TD-SCDMA solutions in China and have been working together to secure commercial opportunities in China and abroad.

Alcatel-Lucent is one of China’s top three suppliers for 3G – being present in all three technologies (CDMA EV-DO, TD-SCDMA, and WCDMA). At the end of April, Alcatel-Lucent signed two framework agreements valued at USD 1.7 billion with China Mobile and China Telecom for the year of 2009 while Alcatel-Lucent is also supplying China Unicom with 3G network solutions in 14 provinces.
