AT&T* and Jasper Wireless announced today the commercial availability of a combined platform to connect and support a variety of emerging consumer electronic and business devices on AT&T’s nationwide wireless network. The companies’ multiyear agreement, announced in May, will enable the wireless connection of personal navigation, in-car navigation, e-readers, mobile Internet devices, gaming, healthcare, tracking, and other devices. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The platform—AT&T Control Center, powered by Jasper Wireless—will accelerate market entry for connected devices while offering unique features such as instant activation and flexible rate plans that benefit device manufacturers and end-user customers, including consumers, small businesses and enterprises.
Through a unique suite of applications and services, the AT&T Control Center offers automated management capabilities for device manufacturers, including:
“With the AT&T Control Center platform, we can offer consumer electronics and M2M device manufacturers and enterprise solution providers an experience they simply cannot receive from another provider,” said Glenn Lurie, president, Emerging Device and Resale, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “We’re streamlining the process by offering a one-stop solution for network provisioning, device activation, customer support, billing options, performance audits and much more. Consumers and businesses will benefit from an unprecedented end-user experience – instant activation, flexible pricing options, and customized support.”
As more consumer electronics and M2M devices come to market with embedded connectivity, market success depends on finding the right business models to reach disparate demographics and population segments. Jasper Wireless has developed billing applications and services that support highly flexible business models, enabling manufacturers and now AT&T the ability to tailor them for specific user groups.
“The Control Center provides a single platform that allows manufacturers to quickly build their connected device businesses and then move seamlessly into new markets with localized service and billing options,” said Jahangir Mohammed, CEO, Jasper Wireless. “By combining the Jasper Wireless global service platform with AT&T’s industry-leading wireless network, we have created a complete connectivity solution that simplifies deployment and operations for manufacturers, while instantly delivering value-added features right to consumers’ devices.”
The partnership was led by AT&T’s Emerging Devices Organization. This new organization is a key component of AT&T’s business strategy to further grow its wireless penetration and develop new distribution models — and in association with AT&T Business Solutions it builds on AT&T’s industry-leading work over the past decade with enterprise customers to enable specialty devices to access its wireless network. AT&T expects many of the electronic devices that consumers and businesses use today will be enhanced with wireless connectivity. This will drive the emergence of new categories of devices and applications.
This connectivity will be made possible through AT&T’s expansive wireless network, offering the broadest global coverage of any U.S. provider. Built on the GSM family of technologies, the de facto wireless world standard, AT&T’s wireless network brings enormous economies of scale to electronic manufacturers who are eager for more cost effective and seamless alternatives for incorporating wireless technology in specialty devices.
