Sony Corporation (hereafter, Sony) has been working to standardize ‘CLEFIA,’ the block cipher algorithm it developed and presented as a state-of-the-art cryptography technique in 2007, and announced today that after final ISO/IEC*1 approval, ‘CLEFIA’ was adopted as one of the ISO/IEC 29192*2 International Standards in lightweight cryptography.

Information security technology to support safe and secure network access for customers has become indispensable in recent years in light of the increase in the wide range of network enabled devices. In particular, there is focus on lightweight cryptography technology suitable for ensuring the security of devices with low-power consumption requirements or those with limited hardware or memory. Under these circumstances ‘CLEFIA’ met the requirements of ISO/IEC 29192, as prescribed by ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 27*3 − the organization responsible for determining the International Standards for information security.

‘CLEFIA’ has the same interface as the US government’s Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). This block cipher has a block length of 128 bits, while key length can be selected from 128 bits, 192 bits or 256 bits. The most impressive feature of ‘CLEFIA’ is its realization of implementation efficiency while maintaining a high level of security. The development of ‘CLEFIA’ maintains superior security based on the latest block cipher design theory. Furthermore, ‘CLEFIA’ adopts the general Feistel structure*4, which is suited for implementation in constrained environments. Also, the ‘Diffusion Switching Mechanism’ (DSM) is employed to reduce processing operations whilst ensuring security. In addition, components for data processing and key scheduling part are shared. These improvements have made it possible to achieve efficient implementations in hardware and software, which had been difficult with conventional encryption technologies.

This excellent implementation efficiency enables ‘CLEFIA’ to demonstrate high performance in devices with limited resources or those with low-power consumption requirements. Accordingly, CLEFIA is suited for lightweight cryptographic applications as indicated in ISO/IEC 29192 in smartcards, RFID tags, sensor networks, medical devices and more, in addition to conventional applications.

Having been recognized as an ISO/IEC International Standard on this occasion, Sony will strive to expand the application of ‘CLEFIA’ in a variety of devices and services. Furthermore, Sony will continue its research and development in the field of lightweight cryptography, in which further progress is anticipated*5.

Through its efforts, Sony will continue to be involved in delivering information security technology that customers can use safely and with confidence.

LG Electronics (LG), a global leader and technology innovator in mobile communications, announced today the launch of its new compact full touchscreen phone, the LG GD510, or more simply, “Pop”. The LG GD510 can be recharged utilizing the power of the sun. The new mobile handset reflects the company’s aggressive green initiatives and represents its commitment to creating a healthier environment for everyone.

“We at LG have successfully reduced 2.1-million tons of greenhouse gas emissions in the first half of 2009 through greater energy efficiency and improved manufacturing processes,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “We develop our products based on the company’s goal of eco-friendly sustainability. Our green policy is included in the handset’s entire lifecycle process, from raw materials through production, logistics, usage and disposal.”

LG’s environmental aspirations are demonstrated in the LG GD510’s solar-battery cover that uses the power of the sun to charge the phone. In addition to saving energy during the day, this also benefits users who are running low on power and are away from a charger at the time. Ten minutes under the sun provides up to 2 minutes 15 seconds of talk time or up to 180 minutes of standby time. Features like Eco-tree and Eco-calculator under the phone’s CO2 menu allow people to track how much they have reduced CO2 emissions by using the solar cell battery.

The LG GD510 is environmentally friendly in other ways, including its construction. LG strictly adheres to the European Union’s RoHS requirements, and went even further with the LG GD510, ensuring that it does not contain any polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and is made free of BFR (brominated flame retardants) and CFR (chlorinated flame retardants) almost up to 99.9 percent.

Moreover, a highly efficient battery charger cuts power consumption and subsequently reduces carbon emissions. When the phone is fully charged, it beeps and displays a message on screen, reminding users to unplug the charger and save energy. Packaging made from recycled paper with soy ink printing is another way the LG GD510 is environmentally-conscious.

“By 2012, LG plans to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by our products to a level 15 percent lower than 2007 by enhancing the energy efficiency of our main products,” added Dr. Ahn. “We will continue our role as a socially responsible leader in the mobile industry.”

In addition to its green attributes, the LG GD510 is efficient in other ways, too. It has a slim outer design and includes all the essential features without compromising usability or quality. As the smallest 3-inch full touchscreen phone on the market, the LG GD510 features a WQVGA wide screen surrounded by a narrow 4.8mm bezel and smooth metal body with a single button on the front that communicates the phone’s sense of simplicity. The LG GD510 also offers full multimedia features such as a 3MP camera suitable for taking photos to share online, as well as an MP3 player and web browser.

The LG GD510 was developed based on LG’s eco-friendly strategy and consumer insight, and will be available in Europe beginning in mid-October, followed by other markets. The solar panel battery cover is available as an optional accessory, which makes an already eco-friendly phone an even more sustainable choice. Prices for the phone and battery cover will vary market-to-market.

The LG GD510 is the handset people who want a simple touchscreen phone have been waiting for.

LG has been one of the industry’s leading innovators in touchscreen phones since it launched the world’s first full touchscreen phone, PRADA Phone by LG, in January 2007. Since then, the company has achieved great success in the touchscreen devices market by creating an array of handsets designed to meet different consumer needs. For instance, LG’s Cookie (KP500) is an affordable full touchscreen phone that has already sold more than 7 million units worldwide since its launch earlier this year. With the LG GD510, LG is applying its tried and true strategy to another new model – this time, to a compact full touchscreen handset.

LG’s consumer research showed that a large group of consumers wanted the functionality of a full touchscreen phone without the extra bulk and unnecessary features that resulted in higher prices. According to the research, many users were also put off by the complexity of feature-laden phones but still desired the easier navigation and larger screens of full touchscreen phones. The LG GD510 was designed to include the key features these users craved, without the overhead of features they didn’t use.

“We gave the LG GD510 an optimized feature set which allowed us to concentrate on making the phone more compact and simpler to use,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Our high-end phones like the Black Label Series New LG Chocolate (LG BL40) may be getting all the attention but there’s a gap in the market for affordable touchscreen phones that we want to fill. The LG GD510 delivers all the essentials in communication, multimedia and entertainment and comes in a compact form factor as well.”

Fully fluent in multimedia, the LG GD510 plays music and movies in several popular file formats and 8 gigabytes of internal memory provides plenty of room for storing large collections. An easy-to-use browser brings all the best mobile content to the device’s large screen and a 3.0 megapixel camera captures high quality photos and videos for sharing online or sending wirelessly to friends.

The spacious 3-inch WQVGA touchscreen extends almost to the edges of the LG GD510 with a narrow 4.8 mm bezel giving the illusion of an uninterrupted sheet of glass. The unit’s sleek design is accented by a single button on the face that functions as the menu, end and cancel keys, depending on the phone’s mode. A slim strip of light around the button shines either green or red to indicate the handset’s function. The LG GD510 is crafted from brushed aluminum which gives it a high-end look and feels solid in the hand even when squeezed.

LG GD510 will be available beginning in mid-October in Europe, followed by other markets. Prices will vary country-to-country and will be announced separately in each individual market.

United by a shared vision to drive innovation and inspiration in design, the collaboration between LG and Twenty8Twelve was a natural fit. The talented sisters found the new Chocolate the perfect product for their first foray into premium phone cases. In addition to creating the limited-edition Twenty8Twelve-branded designer case, the partnership will extend to LG and new Chocolate sponsoring the Twenty8Twelve London Fashion Week show on September 21 and the commissioning of digital content exclusively for the new Chocolate.

Sheathed in luxurious bespoke leather and proudly bearing the Twenty8Twelve name on a stainless steel tag, this stunning designer case is the perfect accessory for the sleek, glossy-black new Chocolate and will be modeled before the who’s who of the international fashion world in London later this month.

“It’s a privilege for us to be working with the new LG Chocolate. It’s the most beautiful phone I’ve ever seen,” said Sienna Miller, who is currently appearing in the hit action movie G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. “We just love its super sleek design. It embodies everything Twenty8Twelve aspires to be,” added Savannah Miller.

“Sienna and Savannah Miller stand out as forward-thinking designers and two of today’s hottest trendsetters while the new Chocolate stands out for challenging conventional design with its disruptive new design,” said Chang Ma, Vice President of Marketing Strategy for LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “As a hip new fashion label, Twenty8Twelve is the perfect partner to highlight the new Chocolate’s exceptional design qualities.”

A highlight for fans of the Miller sisters and fashion will be a behind-the-scenes look into the making of Twenty8Twelve’s runway show to be available exclusively on the new LG Chocolate microsite as well as additional multimedia content including a featurette of Sienna and Savannah sharing their thoughts on the new LG Chocolate.
