Samsung Joining Touch-Screen Phone Frenzy

Posted by VlAD @ 04:25 pm

Samsung Electronics is launching its first touch-screen, full Internet-browsing mobile phone to occupy the domestic smartphone market before the arrival of Apple’s iPhone here.

The Korean electronics giant said Sunday that it will start selling the M4650 “Multi-touch Phone” via LG Telecom at around 500,000 won, excluding rebates from the mobile carrier. The handset has a 2.8-inch LCD screen which doubles as a keypad, which is smaller than iPhone’s 3.5-inch display and thus is used with a stylus pen.

“The smartphone market is getting bigger in other countries thanks to the development of the wireless Internet infrastructure,” Samsung company said in a release. “We hope that the Multi-Touch phone will stimulate the smartphone market in Korea as well.”

Phones with touch-sensitive screens are becoming ever more popular in the high-end market since the successful debut of the iPhone in the United States, where many people use it for listening to music, checking e-mails and for casual Web surfing.

Samsung F210

The Samsung F210 is the first to go public this week. It builds on the already announced at CeBIT 2007 Samsung F200 by adding a 2 megapixel camera, a smoother design and 1GB of integrated memory. The memory is expandable through the microSD memory card slot (unlike Samsung X830) and is more than enough to get you started (unlike Samsung F200 with its meager 5 (read five) MB). The display of this baby is 1.46″ 262K color TFT one with a resolution of 128 x 220 pixels. Currently, it can be found online for around EUR 280 (USD 400).

Eten glofiish X800

The Eten glofiish X800 is a Windows Mobile 6.0 Pro based PocketPC which impresses with 2.8″ VGA display, integrated GPS receiver and Wi-Fi support. It also has quad-band GSM networks support and HSDPA for fast data transfers. The FM radio and the 2 megapixel camera are the other highlights of the device. The device is somewhat compact in size and weight and runs on a powerful 500 MHz Samsung processor, but the camera has no auto focus capability, there is no USB host feature and hardware QWERTY keyboard. Currently, it can be found online for around EUR 450 (USD 660).

Samsung M610

The Samsung M610 is another product of the South Korean company. It’s a budget-oriented GSM handset but as usual for Samsung it comes with stereo Bluetooth support and a microSD memory card slot. It also has a 65K color CSTN display with a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels. It’s equipped with a VGA camera and FM radio. It has tri-band GSM support, but GSM 900 is not among them. Currently, it can be found online for around EUR 140 (USD 200).

The Sony Ericsson Z320 is a stylish clamshell with tri-band GSM/GPRS network support. It comes with a 1.3 megapixel camera, 12 MB internal memory, but unfortunately there’s no memory card slot. World’s Fastest Next G Download Mobile Phones

Posted by VlAD @ 08:24 pm

Telstra today introduced six mobile phones that will grow the Next G™ handset range by around 33 per cent, including two handsets that offer the world’s fastest 3GSM data download speeds.

Samsung A811

The Samsung A811 and the Samsung A821 mobile handsets have a downlink speed rating of 7.2Mbps, matching Telstra’s recently launched super-fast Next G™ wireless broadband cards.*

Telstra Product Management Group Managing Director, Ms Holly Kramer, said the new data speeds on Telstra’s national Next G™ network were revolutionising the way customers use their mobile phones.

Mobile phones have entered a new phase of development and evolved into multi-functional media devices. With the higher download data speeds on Telstra’s Next G™ network, customers can take full advantage of richer mobile content and more advanced applications.

“Downloading large files, receiving emails with attachments, or watching live streaming video can now be done as effortlessly on your 7.2 Mbps enabled Next G™ mobile handset as on your wireless laptop,” Ms Kramer said.

The Samsung A821 also features a dual hinge widescreen, enabling users to watch video in either portrait or landscape modes - ideal for viewing the 33 channels on Mobile FOXTEL. Alternatively, the Samsung A811 delivers the same high speed performance in a stylish, ultra slim slider handset.

Ms Kramer said that Telstra was continuing to grow the range of Next G™ handsets to meet the individual needs and requirements of different market segments.

“While the rapidly evolving mobile technology is exciting, we are taking great care to keep the customer at the forefront of our thinking, matching our wireless products, content and applications to the varied needs of our customers. Customers will now be able to choose from 23 Next G” handsets and the range will continue to grow in line with the increasing number of Australians using the Next G” network,” Ms Kramer said.

Included in the six new Next G™ handsets are the Telstra 165 Country Phone and Nokia N95, which have both received the Telstra Blue Tick for handheld use in rural areas. Telstra has also launched the Nokia E51 and the Samsung A551. Both Nokia handsets will be available in store in mid-November.

‘* Downlink speed rating of 7.2Mbps. Typical customer download speed 550kbps - 3Mbps bursting up to 6Mbps in CBD, metropolitan and selected regional and other locations.

Samsung M110 low end candybar surfaces

Posted by VlAD @ 10:00 pm

With the barrage of new phone announcements by Samsung, you’d think that it should already be enough for this Christmas.

Apparently not. All these phones, like Samsung B&O Serenata, 5 mpx Samsung G800 , GPS equipped Samsung i780, or luxury Samsung Armani P520 are at the very high end of mobile phone offerings. What about for those who don’t want to overspend on their new phone?

Well, they can have a new Samsung M110 handset.

Samsung M110

Not much can be said about Samsung M110 for now. What’s clear from the pictures, is that this candybar handset will have a tiny screen and VGA camera.

Samsung M110 is certainly targeted to the lower end of the market so it’s probably 2.5G GSM/GPRS phone. Idnes.cz mentions FM radio in it, mp3 player is also probably a safe bet. Maybe it’s just the colors, but overall looks of Samsung M110 give a feeling of a rugged phone.

The pictures of Samsung M110 appeared on the site of Dutch online retailer GSM.nu. Unlocked Samsung M110 is also listed on Amazon UK for ?99.99 and is expected to ship on December 05 there.

Samsung’s mobile wrist watch/mobile phone hybrid idea

Posted by VlAD @ 01:07 am

Well, QKfone W800 phone/watch was a nice idea.

But you know what’s the main problem with these kinds of phones is? It’s their size. If you want to have any kind of advanced functionality from such a watch/phone, you’ll end up with a big big bulb on your wrist. And forget about numeric keypad and/or convenient data entry!

So the best you can expect for your hybrid watch to remain actually usable - is a Bluetooth remote control like Sony Ericsson MBW-150 Bluetooth Watch.

Or maybe not? Samsung has quite an interesting idea of how to make your wrist watch/phone hybrid actually small enough and easy to use:

Samsung’s mobile wrist watch/mobile phone hybrid idea

Just split the darn thing into two parts.

The first, detachable one, contains all the things that makes the phone usable - screen, keypad, speaker, microphone, camera, small battery and Bluetooth or UWB communication chip.

The second one, located on the wristband has the rest. 2.5/3G communications chipset, main battery, application processors, etc.

All the real communication/processing work is done here and, when the first part is detached, the data is transmitted via Bluetooth or UWB

Market update #1

Posted by VlAD @ 11:23 pm

Starting today we will try to deliver you information on the latest (and greatest) mobile phones that hit the stores on a weekly basis. This is the first article of this kind and we will consider it experimental since its future depends solely on your interest on the matter. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to comment local availability in stores near you, as well as on carrier-subsidized prices. It’s going to be an intense season as many phone makers make their long-waited handsets available in the months right before Christmas.

Nokia N95 8GB

Probably the most exciting of all was the news of Nokia N95 8GB Edition that starts shipping. It comes dressed in black and has undergone several changes. The main one of course is the thrilling memory capacity of 8GB. The screen has also grown up from the 2.6″ of the original to 2.8″ in the new edition. The display still supports QVGA resolution and visualizes up to 16M colors. Nokia N95 8GB is powered by 1200 mAh Li-Ion battery as opposed to the rather modest 950 mAh in the original Nokia N95 - hopefully the new battery will be able to deal better with the phone’s energy needs. The weak battery was probably the most criticized feature of the original N95 model. The higher capacity battery on the other side has resulted in removing the lens cover. Finally, another significant change in the smartphone’s hardware has been made - the RAM is now double the size of the original to improve user experience with the browser or with multiple applications running in the background. Nokia N95 8GB’s expected retail price is EUR 560 (USD 780) before taxes or subsidies. Currently, it can be found online for around EUR 570 (USD 810).

LG KU990 Viewty

The next to go on our Market Update for week 43 is the LG KU990 Viewty. Stylishly reminiscent of the glossy LG KE850 Prada phone, it features full touch-control interface and a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with xenon flash. The LG KU990 Viewty has a large 3″ 262K color TFT touchscreen display with a 240 x 400 pixels resolution and boasts a 5 megapixel camera with Schneider-Kreuznach optics, image stabilization and xenon flash, yet capable of shooting quality video clips with up to 120 fps. It is up to the user to choose from shooting in auto focus or manual focus mode with ISO sensitivity of up to ISO 800. The LG KU990 is also equipped with a secondary VGA camera for making video calls as the device features HSDPA 3.6 Mbps. Storing images, tracks, clips or files is easy with the onboard 100 MB memory, expandable up to 2GB through the microSD memory card slot. Music fans will enjoy the music player and FM radio, while in the same time you will be able to watch DivX videos on the large 3″ display. The LG KU990 connectivity capabilities include Bluetooth 1.2 with A2DP support and USB 2.0 High-speed. You can check our in-depth review. Currently, it can be found online for around EUR 420 (USD 600).

Samsung F700 “Croix” coming to US?

Posted by VlAD @ 07:44 pm

Word on the streets is that we could see that amazing smartphone stateside sometime soon. The rumor states that Verizon might be the carrier of the “Croix” that the Jesus-Phone gets nailed to, that was a bad pun, I’m going to hell for that one.

Samsung F700

Furthermore, the phone is supposed to be getting fitted with the necessary CDMA and EV-DO chipsets instead of the HSPA and GSM that it has now. Everything else, including the 3MP cam, touch interface, and sliding keyboard would stay.

Samsung F700

With Vodafone and Verizon getting all cute and snuggly together over in the corner, it could happen. I wouldn’t expect such a move until the hype from the Voyager goes down though.
