Motorola today announced a biometric attachment for its MC70 and MC75 enterprise digital assistants (EDAs). The mobile solution provides government, law enforcement and enterprise security agencies with advanced biometric identification and verification tools as well as real-time mobile data access delivered in a single, rugged mobile computing platform.

The solution enables law enforcement officers to stay on patrol while identifying individuals with outstanding criminal issues or warrants and also helps to enhance border control management as agents can utilize the mobile solution to verify immigration status in remote areas. Government and enterprise security agencies can leverage the solution to help ensure proper access privileges for individuals and verify real-time employment status.

“Today, government, public safety and security agencies are looking for innovative ways to continue to drive operational efficiency and improve organizational knowledge,” said Girish Rishi, vice president and general manager, Motorola Applications and Data Solutions. “Motorola’s MC70/75 EDAs with the new biometric attachment are uniquely suited for the mobility needs of government officials, law enforcement officers and enterprise security agents. This solution helps agencies increase productivity and enhance response time at the point of activity.”

Part of Motorola’s MOTOA4TM portfolio, the MC70/75 EDAs with biometric attachment feature a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) platform, offering agencies enhanced solution flexibility with an ecosystem of peripherals and accessories. The standards-based platform also enables flexibility in the delivery of applications as the biometric attachment supports Motorola’s Mobile AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) solution as well as applications developed by third parties. Government and public safety agencies can utilize mobile identity management capabilities along with other applications on the same handheld computing terminal, helping to optimize department expenditures and maximize return on investment.

The GSA (General Services Administration) FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standards) 201 certified fingerprint sensor in the biometric attachment is optimized for mobile environments, allowing agents to capture one to 10 fingerprints in a variety of lighting and environmental conditions. Optional contact and contact-less smart card readers can be used to verify the identity of individuals against secure documents such as ePassports, ID cards, visas or employee ID badges.

Designed to match the rugged standards of the MC70/75 EDAs for use in harsh environmental conditions such as drop test, operating and storage temperatures and humidity specifications, the biometric attachment enables government officials, law enforcement officers and enterprise security agents to accurately identify an individual in real-time and securely access agency information resources in mobile environments.

The development of biometrics technology for the MC70/75 EDAs is another innovation resulting from the acquisition of Symbol Technologies in 2007. By combining the complementary technology portfolios of Motorola and Symbol, Motorola continues to deliver solutions that address the unique needs of government, law enforcement and enterprise communities. Motorola is committed to ensuring that communicating with technology becomes second nature to government and public safety officials. The MC70 and MC75 EDAs deliver multimodal voice and data communications, GPS tracking capabilities, integrated 1D/2D barcode scanning and optional auto-focus color camera image capture, in a single, compact and rugged form factor.

Motorola is showcasing the biometric attachment for the MC70/75 EDAs at the Biometric Consortium Conference, Sept. 23-25, 2008 at the Tampa Convention Center, Booth 211.

Motorola is rolling out a showcase of solutions at The Cable Show 2008 designed to meet an explosive market demand for powerful, personalized media experiences. Among the new technologies on display, Motorola will: unveil its advanced advertising portfolio, demonstrate the fastest wired and wireless broadband speeds, prove the potential of new service assurance models, and deliver high quality, innovative video and audio entertainment solutions for the consumer.

The goal at this year’s Cable Show is to highlight the technologies that personalize video experiences and deliver new revenue streams from advanced services. To achieve that goal, Motorola is focused on three tenets of service delivery: enabling accessible broadband everywhere, optimizing networks to support services for today and tomorrow, and conveying content to consumers that is relevant and meaningful to their lives.

Broadband Everywhere
From optical access to 4G wireless, Motorola will have a wide range of network technologies on display. On the wired side, Motorola will show the BSR 64000 cable modem termination system (CMTS) – newly recognized with CableLabs® DOCSIS® 3.0 bronze qualification – as well as a live demonstration of the Motorola TX32 decoupled downstream module designed to increase downstream capacity in the CMTS by more than 500 percent. Motorola will also exhibit other ultra-broadband technologies, including passive optical network (PON) solutions for cable operators, and our DOCSIS 3.0-certified SURFboard® cable modems.

For wireless, Motorola is showing an extensive WiMAX experience including a WiMAX-enabled vehicle, an open kiosk, and devices interoperating on the Motorola WiMAX network in the booth. Using WiMAX Ultra Mobile PCs, laptops, PC cards, and USB devices powered by an ecosystem of WiMAX chipsets, attendees can experience interactive, personal rich-media applications. As cable operators branch into wireless delivery, WiMAX promises a robust, always-on connection that extends their reach, mobilizing their triple play into a quad play that and enables new revenue-generating services.

Optimized Networks
From Motorola’s comprehensive suite of network-optimization technologies comes an innovative approach to advanced advertising. Demonstrations on the booth integrate Motorola’s switched digital video (SDV) platform, Motorola’s Advanced On Demand platform, the latest Motorola CherryPicker® CAP-1000 and the new Motorola APEX1000 Edge QAM. These integrated products show the potential for delivering targeted content – be it entertainment or advertising, linear or on demand programming — with existing equipment and incremental software upgrades. This approach protects operators’ capital investments while introducing new sources of revenue. Motorola will also be demonstrating the new SURFboard (M-eMTA) Digital Voice Platform for delivery of cost-effective, multi-line IP voice and data services as well our self-installable SURFboard eMTA solutions.

With the announcement of the Motorola SmartStream Terminal Data Collector (STDC), Motorola has added a robust set-top diagnostics solution to the company’s broader service assurance portfolio. The STDC provides remote collection and presentation of detailed diagnostic set-top data and will be shown in conjunction with the Motorola NBBS Device Management Platform. Together these solutions deliver comprehensive device management capabilities, saving service providers on operating expenses and increasing consumer satisfaction.

To facilitate increased demand for HD content distribution, Motorola will also showcase the new DSR-6050 IRD solution for seamlessly converting programmer’s new MPEG-4 HD feeds to the cable-compatible MPEG-2 format .l

Content to the Consumer
In the Advanced Set-top Theater Experience zone, Motorola will demonstrate the stunning performance of the Motorola DCX3400 set-tops, complete with high-definition, MPEG-4 video and enhanced Dolby® Digital Plus surround sound experience. Showcasing time-shifting and place-shifting applications, including the whole-home digital video recorder (DVR) experience, Motorola will highlight a new world of media mobility, enabling consumers to access high-quality video and audio entertainment, whenever and wherever they are.

Verizon Wireless, builder and operator of the nation’s most reliable wireless network, announced today that VZ Navigator(SM) (Version 4) is now available on select consumer phones. First announced during CTIA WIRELESS 2008, the newest version of VZ Navigator allows customers in 75 cities from coast to coast to access information about traffic incidents on major roadways, obtain traffic updates and find detours around traffic congestion and accidents. More cities are expected to be added in the coming year. In addition, the new version of VZ Navigator offers a 3D perspective view of maps, a movie and events finder, weather reports and forecasts, and gas prices at nearby gas stations.

Verizon Wireless’ VZ Navigator service is a location-based service (LBS) application that utilizes location-based technology and real-time and historical information feeds. The new version of VZ Navigator offers customers the following features:

Traffic Integration – Customers in 75 cities can access routes that are calculated using both historical and real-time reported traffic information. Historical information allows customers to see on average whether the traffic is impacted by traffic lights, heavy traffic or school zones. Incident and flow information tells customers how traffic is flowing and includes details about reported accidents, disabled vehicles and congestion. VZ Navigator’s historical data covers over 750,000 miles of roads in 48 states. The traffic tracking center continually monitors conditions along the customers’ routes, sending proactive alerts to drivers about conditions ahead of them on their chosen routes. Detour options allow users to compare estimated times of arrival and conditions before selecting a new route.

Local Movies and Events – Customers can now search for show times, critics’ ratings and other details for movies, concerts, plays, sporting events, and other social events based on the physical location of their phones.

3D Perspective View – Enhances navigation by displaying maps from angles customers would see through car windshields, making it easier to visualize turn-by-turn directions.

Gas Finder – Provides customers with information on the location of gas stations close to their physical locations and even provides gas prices as reported by many gas stations in the area. Once a customer selects a station, VZ Navigator can also provide turn-by-turn directions to the selected gas station.

Weather – Provides current weather conditions and forecasts based on the physical location of the customer’s phone without manually inputting an address.

Lee Daniels, vice president of consumer product development for Verizon Wireless, said, “With the new features of VZ Navigator, Verizon Wireless customers now have a powerful navigation device that not only gives them directions but also provides the latest traffic information and more. The expanded services on VZ Navigator are another example of how we provide our customers with a great value for their wireless dollar – on the most reliable wireless network in the country.”

Pricing and Availability
VZ Navigator (Version 4) is available today for $9.99 for unlimited monthly access or $2.99 for one-day use on select Get It Now®-enabled phones in the Get Going section under Travel & Guides or Featured Apps. Airtime or megabyte charges and specific terms of use apply when browsing, downloading and using the application. Traffic integration is only available in certain areas.

Verizon Wireless customers who currently have a subscription to VZ Navigator can upgrade on select phones by simply selecting Options from the main screen of VZ Navigator then selecting Check for Updates. At launch, the following phones are able to access VZ Navigator (Version 4): G’zOne Type-V and G’zOne Type-S; Kyocera K323; The V(TM), enV(TM), enV(2)(TM), Chocolate, Venus(TM), and Voyager(TM) by LG, LG VX5300, LG VX5400, LG VX8300, LG VX8350, LG VX8600, LG VX8700, and LG VX9400; Nokia 6205 and Nokia 2605; MOTOKRZR(TM) K1m, MOTORAZR(TM) maxx Ve, MOTORAZR(2) V9m, MOTORAZR(TM) V3c, MOTORAZR(TM) V3m, MOTOSLVR L7c, MOTO(TM) Z6c world edition, and Motorola W385; and Alias(TM) by Samsung, Verizon Wireless Juke by Samsung, Samsung SCH-a930, Samsung SCH-a990, Samsung SCH-u410, Samsung SCH-u540, and Samsung SCH-u620.

Speeds of up to 42 Mbps represent the next phase in HSPA Evolution. These speeds are achieved by combining new higher order modulation technology (64QAM), together with 2×2 Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) antenna technology. The first step of the HSPA evolution will be introduced during 2008.

The improved speed will assist operators in leveraging existing network infrastructure to meet growing consumer appetite for advanced multimedia services. The demonstration will be made using a handheld form-factor device based on Ericsson Mobile Platforms access technology.

Ericsson’s WCDMA/HSPA Radio Access Network solutions offer an evolutionary path for HSPA Evolution. For example, the RBS 3000 family of Ericsson base stations has support for both HSPA Evolution and LTE. Ericsson’s recently launched next-generation radio base station family, the RBS 6000 series, offers a enhanced multi-standard solution that supports GSM/EDGE, WCDMA/HSPA Evolution and LTE, all in a single package.

Ulf Ewaldsson, Vice President and Head of Product Area Radio at Ericsson, says: “Achieving speeds of up to 42 Mbps is a major industry milestone. It further strengthens the position of HSPA as the major mobile broadband technology as we go forward. Consumers will enjoy an even richer communications experience thanks to higher speeds, while operators will be able to reduce network operating costs via increased throughput enabled by HSPA Evolution.”

HSPA Evolution is a proven step in the WCDMA/HSPA evolutionary path. Today, HSPA has been commercially launched in 80 countries on all continents and in 185 networks. Ninety of these networks have been delivered by Ericsson and these operators are able to migrate smoothly toward HSPA Evolution.

The demonstration will be held at Las Vegas Convention Center, Central Hall, Booth 2024, from April 1 to 3.

Ericsson has recently opened an updated Experience Center in its North American headquarters in Plano, TX, with a complete HSPA-based mobile broadband network with a wide range of commercially available devices.
