No Comments »Motorola, has played a key role in five of the European Union’s eight BIODEVII projects, led by France, helping to create biometric solutions for border control in Austria, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain and the UK.
The aim of the EU’s BIODEVII pilot programme is to establish best practice around the use of biometrics to strengthen the visa system throughout the EU. The introduction of a visa system backed by biometric technology is being developed to reduce visa fraud (and ‘visa shopping’), prevent identity theft and to combat terrorism and human trafficking.
Nokia and Trolltech ASA announced that they have entered into an agreement that Nokia will make a public voluntary tender offer to acquire Trolltech (www.trolltech.com), a company headquartered in Oslo, Norway and publicly listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange. Trolltech is a recognized software provider with world-class software development platforms and frameworks. In addition to the key software assets, its talented team will play an important role in accelerating the implementation of Nokia’s software strategy.
Nokia will offer NOK 16 per share in cash. The board of directors of Trolltech has unanimously recommended that its shareholders accept Nokia’s Offer. Holders of 35,024,830 shares, representing approximately 66,43 % of Trolltech’s issued shares and votes have as of January 27, 2008 irrevocably undertaken to accept the Offer. Haavard Nord, Vuonislahti Invest AS (controlled by Eirik Chambe-Eng), Teknoinvest and certain funds managed by Index Ventures are among the shareholders who have agreed to tender their shares to Nokia.
AT&T announced the availability of AT&T U-verseSM Voice, a next-generation digital voice service delivered over the AT&T U-verse Internet Protocol network. Detroit is the first area in the nation where AT&T U-verse Voice is available.
The company began a controlled launch in late December and has since expanded the service’s availability. The service will continue to expand to more local customers and additional markets in 2008.
AT&T U-verse Voice completes the company’s IP triple play. With U-verse Voice, U-verse customers receive all the benefits of having advanced video, broadband, voice and wireless services from a single provider, and having their services work together for a new level of integration, functionality and convenience.
3M scientists developed an ultra-compact, LED-illuminated projection engine designed for integration into virtually any personal electronic device. Roughly the size of a wireless earpiece and less than half an inch thick, the 3M mobile projection engine delivers brilliant VGA resolution images and is available today.

ZyXEL announced today their collaboration in providing an advanced Mobile WiMAX device to Sprint that will debut with the launch of Sprint’s Xohm network in 2008. The Sequans-based ZyXEL device is an integrated access design that will enable Sprint to offer its Xohm Internet mobile services.

The ZyXEL MAX-206m2 device is a 4G modem/router targeted for commercial release in the second quarter of 2008. It delivers high speed Internet access wirelessly with built-in residential gateway functions in an elegant form factor.
Panasonic today announced the development of the 32 Gigabyte (GB) SD High Capacity (SDHC) Memory Card with Class 6 speed specification. With the ability to store up to eight hours of High Definition video, the 32GB SDHC Memory Card prototype will be showcased at the 2008 International CES in Las Vegas from January 7-10 at the Panasonic booth #9405.

The card is also equipped with a new user-friendly labeling feature, which allows users to write titles or comments directly onto labels on the front and back of the card. Panasonic is planning to introduce the new labeling feature in its other SD Memory Card models, with a running changeover from the current card designs in spring 2008.
The arrival of Panasonic’s 32GB model further strengthens its Pro High Speed line-up which currently has five models available: 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and 16GB card sizes with the Class 6 speed specification.
Nokia announced today that it is optimizing the Nokia N95 8GB for networks using 850/1900 MHz HSDPA (high speed data packet access) in the Americas.
The new Nokia N95 8GB offers a class-leading five megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and autofocus, WLAN, and a full eight gigabytes of internal memory. Complete with captivating 3D graphics, the Nokia N95 8GB will also offer compatibility with the upcoming N-Gage games service. It is also a full-featured GPS device with assisted GPS (A-GPS) and a large map database covering more than 100 countries, including a number of US state maps preloaded.
The Nokia N95 8GB will also support Nokia Share Online 3.0, which will be made available via Nokia Download! and will enable consumers to upload photos and videos with one click to Flickr or Vox, allowing them to quickly share content with their social communities.
The N95 8GB multimedia computer has an estimated retail price of $749 and will start shipping to Nokia Nseries retailers across the United States, the Nokia flagship stores in New York and Chicago as well as online e-tailers during the first quarter of 2008.
SanDisk has begun to sample 12-gigabyte (GB) microSDHC flash memory cards to major phone manufacturers for testing and evaluation.

In recent years the wireless industry has made a series of progressive improvements in the performance. However, end users now make increased use of mobile multimedia services and they stay online for longer periods. They therefore require faster data rates, quicker response times and longer battery life in order to enjoy the benefits of services such as voice over IP, mobile video, sharing and collaboration and rich multimedia telephony.
One year ago Nokia Siemens Networks conducted the world’s first LTE demonstration in conjunction with MIMO (Multiple Input / Multiple Output) antenna technology. In this demonstration peak data rates of 160 Megabits per second were realized.
The now performed field trial was a world first since it was conducted in a real urban outdoor environment with multiple users using the new 2.6 GHz spectrum. It confirms that LTE performance requirements can be met using 3GPP standardized technologies and it realized data rates of more than 100 Mega bits per second over distances of several hundred meters, while maintaining excellent throughput at the edge of typical urban mobile radio cells.
