A new online community where young people can have their say on the environment by uploading videos, pictures and comments is being launched today.

iucnThe site, www.connect2earth.org, will also allow people to rank other entries, discuss the issues that matter most to them, and share smart ideas and solutions from their own communities. Each month users will vote on a winner who will be rewarded with a Nokia mobile phone.

United Kingdom court rules Qualcomm patents invalid

NokiaNokia announced today that a United Kingdom High Court judge issued a ruling in favor of Nokia in the action brought by Qualcomm against Nokia on 24 May, 2006. In the ruling the judge determined that all of Qualcomm’s asserted GSM patent claims are invalid. Therefore Nokia does not need to compensate Qualcomm for these patents.

We are pleased with the Court’s decision that the patent claims are invalid and believe it is consistent with and supported by the facts,’ said Rick Simonson, Chief Financial Officer, Nokia. ‘This is the second court to conclude that Qualcomm does not have relevant and valid GSM patents.”

vimpelcom logoOpen Joint Stock Company “Vimpel-Communications” (“VimpelCom”), today announced the completion of the merger of its indirect wholly-owned subsidiary, Lillian Acquisition, Inc. (“Lillian Acquisition”) with and into Golden Telecom, Inc. (“Golden Telecom”).

Because Lillian Acquisition was the owner of at least 90 percent of the shares of common stock of Golden Telecom outstanding immediately prior to the merger, under applicable Delaware law no action was required by Golden Telecom’s other stockholders to effect the merger. Upon completion of the merger, Golden Telecom became the surviving corporation and an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of VimpelCom. Each remaining share of Golden Telecom common stock was canceled and (other than those shares of common stock, if any, owned by stockholders who properly perfect dissenters’ rights) converted into the right to receive $105.00 in cash, without interest.

Nokia Morph conceptMorph, a joint nanotechnology concept, developed by Nokia Research Center (NRC) and the University of Cambridge (UK) - was launched today alongside the “Design and the Elastic Mind” exhibition, on view from February 24 to May 12, 2008, at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Morph features in both the exhibition catalog and on MoMA’s official website.

Morph is a concept that demonstrates how future mobile devices might be stretchable and flexible, allowing the user to transform their mobile device into radically different shapes. It demonstrates the ultimate functionality that nanotechnology might be capable of delivering: flexible materials, transparent electronics and self-cleaning surfaces.
